Front Porch Digital Wins Emmy® Award for SAMMA® Technology

Sept. 10, 2011

ANNECY, France — Sept. 10, 2011 — Front Porch Digital, the global leader in solutions to migrate, manage, and market media content, announced today that it will be awarded a Technical Emmy® for achievement in engineering for “The System for Automated Migration of Media Assets,” which is the technology behind the SAMMA® product line. Technical Emmy’s are awarded to technologies for their “significant impact on the industry” by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

“As a video restoration expert, I was seeing vital content deteriorating on a daily basis,” said Jim Lindner, original inventor of the now patented SAMMA process. “I felt it was imperative to invent a method for preserving our historical video records. Chi Tsang, Front Porch Digital’s vice president of engineering for SAMMA systems, was key in developing the technology, which continues to advance — as can be witnessed by the presence at IBC of the next-generation HD-capable SAMMA system.”

The award requires a thorough vetting to ensure that the technology is pioneering and not only has had significant impact in the industry, but also has been adopted globally. SAMMA technology has been used to ensure the preservation of extremely important historical events including SHOAH testimonies, UN Rwanda trials, myriad subject matter at the Library of Congress, and much more. The importance of the thousands of hours of historical preservation was an important factor in the Emmy application.

Entries were judged on whether the technologies described were “so extensive an improvement on existing methods or are so innovative in nature that they materially have affected the transmission, recording, or reception of television.”

“The amount of videotape and film that’s been migrated to provide archive-quality content to multiple file formats in one single pass through use of the SAMMAsolo and
SAMMArobot solution is monumental,” the Emmy Award judging committee said in its recommendation. “The tens of thousands of hours of historical content saved from implementing ‘The SAMMA Automated Process’ has materially affected what viewers are seeing today, and will see for many generations to come. Their process is such an improvement over previous methods that Front Porch Digital’s SAMMA system earns and deserves the Award.”

“It’s a privilege to be recognized by industry experts and peers with an Emmy Award,” said Mike Knaisch, Front Porch Digital president and CEO. “We are proud to be a part of the small group of honorees that are chosen each year. It’s exciting to be able to put this on our résumé.”

Front Porch Digital will receive its award at the Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards banquet at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 12, 2012.

About SAMMA Technology
SAMMAsolo is a compact, single-stream appliance that automatically migrates archive-quality content from videotape to digital files in multiple formats while also monitoring and quality-controlling the process. The migration preserves source timecode and also associates indexing and technical metadata. Digitized content is automatically moved to nearline spinning disk storage and can then be exported to external data tape storage.

SAMMArobot is an automated, high-throughput migration system that provides up to 1,000 hours a week of videotape content conversion. The SAMMArobot is loaded with batches of between 48 and 80 videotapes, depending on format, migrating up to seven tapes simultaneously, each with its own settings for error detection and multiple digital file outputs.
